I recently took QPR training, and I had many takeaways from it. The training gave me a lot of insight on how to detect if someone is suicidal. They taught a lot of the common phrases that many suicidal people say. This is because suicidal people often do try to reach out, but not in a very obvious way. They give very direct verbal cues such as “I’m going to end it all” and “I wish I were dead”. Normally, these would be very obvious clues that someone is suicidal, but I realized that a lot of the time people throw these phrases around when in times of frustration. I notice that even in my own friend group people say phrases like this but may not mean it. Another takeaway is that helping someone seek help is a lot less of a daunting task when you have the right training. This 1-hour course gave me so much insight on how to help someone, and gave many resources to help as well. The course gives psychological tips on how to make the person know and feel that they are the number one priority. Telling them things to let them know you are there for them and are willing to listen to their problems in a non-judgemental way can make all the difference. Also, showing you are taking the lead to help them and shows them that they don’t have to have the burden of asking for help from anyone else for help can make it a lot more comfortable for them.
